The Ofer Shipping Group roots lie in the first half of the 1900s, in a small ship chandlery run by Joseph Herscovic and his two ambitious sons, Sammy and Yuli.
In the shipyards of the 1940s and 1950s, the two brothers forged an enviable reputation for honesty, industriousness, professionalism and high quality of service.
Having changed their name to Ofer, the two displayed their legendary business acumen and vision when, in 1956, they opened the shipping agency: Mediterranean Seaways. This led to the next milestone and a leap into ship management and ownership with their first ship, the Eyal (named for Sammy Ofer’s eldest son).
Over the years the fleet multiplied many times over and became a powerful force within the industry. Sammy and Yuli diversified their holdings and gathered a strong team that helped propel the company into becoming one of Israel's largest private holding companies. The transition was spear-headed by Udi Angel, now Chairman of Ofer Group, who became the mangaging director of the Ofer Shipping Group in 1980.
Today the fourth generation, Ori Angel, continues to drive the Ofer Shipping Group forward with the same values that made it Israel’s number one private shipping company and a powerful global player.
Building on foundations and values that were set over 60 years, the company is using its enduring partnerships, vision and strength to expand as never before and cement its reputation as a world-class ship management provider and operations expert.
